RSS305 - Bergamot - If you watch in the shady, moist ditches and in the
edges of the tree covered areas, you might be lucky enough to find a stand of wild
Bergamot, or Beebalm, growing. This member of the mint family can get up to around two
and a half feet tall. It has a pleasant 'musky' type of scent, rather than a mint smell.
I gathered a couple of dozen of these plants and planted them in my flower bed out front.
If I can keep my kids from 'pulling the weeds' maybe I'll have a stand of them for myself
next spring. They seem to bloom after it starts getting hot, but while there is still
the occasional heavy rains to keep the shaded areas moist. I took this picture and
gathered mine in June of 2005.
