FTG108 - California Poppy - I grew up in northern California. Every spring areas with
poor, bare soil would be transformed into fields of glowing oranges and yellows as the
California poppys bloomed. Frequently, during the dry summer months, a rain would bring
out a fresh crop of them blooming. For years I had wondered if I could get them to grow
here. A few years back, my mother patiently gathered seed from them for me and sent me an
envelope with almost a quarter of an inch in seeds, all the way across the bottom. This
year, I have several poppy plants blooming out in my garden. I was so happy to see them.
When I was growing up and going to grade school we used to play a jump
rope game. Two kids would be turning the rope and one person would be in jumping. This
person would chant, "California Poppies, tap me on the back", and the next kid in line
would run in and start jumping. As soon as they got oriented, they would tap the first
person on the shoulder or back and the first person would run out and get at the end of
the line. So, when designing this pattern, I couldn't resist adding the little chant we
used to use as children. If you wish, you may move the poppy into the center of the
picture and not put in the kid's chant.
