FTG106 - Black Iris - I bought a package of these black 'Superstition'
iris roots in the spring of 2003. Until last spring, we were renting and I had to keep
all my flowers and plants in pots. The black iris seemed to thrive as far as putting on
leaves, but only had one bloom last spring. We bought this little house here last spring
(2004) and the first thing I did was start planting my irises, roses and other plants.
This spring, the black irises are blooming very prolifically. It is fascintating to watch
them. Before the petals start showing, the green outside shows no hint of the coming
color. As the petals show, but before they unfurl, they are as black as an ink blot. When
they open on up they are this deep, rich, dark purple. This is another iris I may have to
create a larger study of, showing an unopened bud next to a fully open bloom.
